Elon Musk, CEO and chief designer of SpaceX, a US-based space exploration technology company, has manufactured and launched advanced rockets and spacecraft for the past 15 years. His goal is to enable humans to live on other planets.
Just this year, SpaceX successfully launched the recovery orbital rocket for the first time, which is a milestone for rocket recovery. NASA relied on Musk and SpaceX to complete the task of supplying large quantities of cargo to the International Space Station. NASA’s orders are just a few of the 70 contracts that SpaceX is going to sign for over $10 billion in the future.
As the CEO of more than 4,000 employees of SpaceX, Musk, 45, manages this group of talented employees through the company's financial and corporate culture.
Musk has offices around the world. He needs to sit at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California, to manage Cape Canaveral Air Force Base, Florida, and launch facilities at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, Texas. McGregor’s rocket development work also needs to arrange for offices in Houston, Texas, Chantilly, Virginia, and Washington, DC. Not to mention, he was the task that Tesla’s chief executive needed to accomplish.
Musk listed Glasshouse's best CEO list, and his staff gave him a 98% satisfaction rating. The staff commented that “crazy and stressful work has magical powerâ€, “the work is challenging and rewards are huge†and “everyone lives like a familyâ€.
A synthesis technician at SpaceX concluded: “I really like working at SpaceX. I am fulfilling my dream of building a space rocket. Full benefits and allowances, company’s clothing, drinks, food, stocks, and Uncle Marsk to us. The other things provided are all really joyful, incredible and indulging in. It is impossible to describe the work in SpaceX in precise language, and sincerely thank Mr. Musk in the bottom of my heart.
The evaluation of the company by SpaceX employees reveals the impressive corporate culture of Musk and his leadership team. How is this corporate culture formed? Special mention must be made of Musk’s innovative leadership style. Musk was born in South Africa, moved to Canada at the age of 17, and then immigrated to the United States to attend the University of Pennsylvania. Musk’s brilliant experience began with a proper investment. He earned the first pot of life as the co-founder of PayPal.
It can be said that Musk is Kobe Bryant of the aerospace industry. He has made himself an inspirational leader, just as transportation has been redefined. For the reason why SpaceX has a successful corporate culture, Glassdoor website locked the answer on Musk.
Glassdoor put more focus on how Musk leads the company's employees, how he inspires employees, and how he selects employees from the interview crowd instead of focusing on Musk himself. Musk revealed the science and strategy behind SpaceX in an exclusive interview with Glassdoor.
The following is a record of Glassdoor's interview with Musk.
Glassdoor: What does a leader mean to you?
Musk: Your title merely made you a manager and convinced your employees to make you their leader. We hope that the leaders of the company can find ways to mobilize the enthusiasm of the entire team and continue to encourage them to advance, reduce the noise in the work, and protect the team work.
Whether you are a SpaceX manager or a leader at any level, we stress that not the entire team serves the leadership, but the leadership serves the entire team and helps everyone in the team work as best as possible. I also need to follow this principle. Leaders should work harder to set an example than employees reporting to leaders.
Glassdoor: As the CEO of SpaceX Corporation, which time has you been most proud of?
Musk: SpaceX’s proudest moment is the moment when it successfully launched the world’s first recyclable orbital rocket. Since its establishment, SpaceX has been working hard to develop recyclable rockets. At the moment of successful launch, I was very proud of the SpaceX team.
Glassdoor: How do you manage time?
Musk: My recent work has focused on reducing signal noise. I will focus on the most important things and will not waste time on unnecessary things.
Glassdoor: What advice do you have for other leaders?
Musk: Hiring good staff, because employing unsuitable staff can bring a lot of inconvenience to the company. Our biggest challenge is to choose HR. Good HR can make every job for the company well. My other suggestion is not to blindly follow the trend, and we can properly question and challenge the status quo. Before starting a company project, make sure that you fully understand the basic principles of the project, otherwise you may continue to work on the basis of mistakes.
Glassdoor: What do you think is the most important thing as a CEO?
Musk: What I think is important is that we must have an attractive and exciting future plan to study what is useful to the society. Perhaps a small change can benefit thousands of people.
Glassdoor: What was your first job?
Musk: At the age of 10, he coded and published a game software. In adulthood, the first job was to clean up the granary at a farm in Saskatchewan.
Glassdoor: How do you schedule your morning?
Musk: Spend 30 minutes dealing with important e-mails and then say “goodbye†when the children go to school. After driving in a bath, they drive to work. They mainly work on engineering and design discussions.
Glassdoor: When you have no plans to go to Mars, how would you spend your free time?
Musk: On Fireman's Day, play first-person shooters with my kids, watch movies, hang out with friends, and occasionally attend crazy parties.
