Current situation
100 billion yuan industry is hot
On April 1, Toshiba Group announced its entry into the Chinese LED (Semiconductor Light Emitting Diode) lighting market, and its subsidiary Toshiba Lighting (Fuzhou) Co., Ltd. launched a 5.5-watt LED lamp with a brightness equivalent to 40-watt incandescent lamp in the Chinese market. On March 17, the Toshiba Group terminated the production of ordinary incandescent lamps in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. As one of the birthplaces of Toshiba's business, incandescent products have withdrawn from the historical arena after more than 120 years of glorious history.
Toshiba Group's full efforts in the "gold rush" LED industry is only a microcosm of domestic and foreign lighting companies. At present, almost all lighting companies in China have begun to involve LED lighting products, but there has not been a real leading enterprise; foreign lighting companies have also seen huge opportunities in the Chinese market, and they have frequent movements, but there has not been a situation of hegemony. It can be said that the LED lighting industry is in the eve of market brewing and integration.
      Industry "cake" quickly grows bigger
Due to the energy-saving advantages of LED lighting products, the market demand is huge under a series of policy escorts. Dou Linping, deputy secretary-general of China Lighting Association, pointed out that the driving force for the development of LED lighting industry comes from three aspects: outdoor lighting, display and car lighting.
In the field of lighting, at the end of 2008, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Finance launched the pilot project of semiconductor lighting application engineering (referred to as “Ten Cities and Ten Thousand Citiesâ€), and plans to promote more than 300,000 LED municipal lighting fixtures in 10-20 cities by 2010. According to Dou Linping, LED lighting applications, in addition to street lights, outdoor engineering projects, large-scale events, etc. also have a large demand for LED lighting products. Only the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games has brought about 5 billion yuan of business opportunities to the LED lighting industry. The Shanghai World Expo has invested 1 billion yuan in LED lighting. In addition, Guangzhou Asian Games, Shenzhen Universiade and other projects have provided a broad space for development of LED lighting. It is expected that in 2015, LED's market share in China's lighting market will reach 20%, driving the industry to reach 500 billion yuan, and China will enter the top three in the global LED lighting market.
It is understood that under the idea of building a low-carbon economy with energy conservation and environmental protection, the "cake" of China's semiconductor lighting industry is rapidly expanding. According to relevant agencies, in 2010, the output value of China's LED lighting industry will exceed 150 billion yuan, double the number in 2008.
Policy promotes green lighting
With the comprehensive promotion of the low-carbon economy, green lighting has been highly valued by the Chinese government.
In October 2009, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology and other six ministries and commissions jointly issued the "Semiconductor Lighting Energy-Saving Industry Development Opinion" proposed a clear goal: by 2015, the semiconductor lighting energy-saving industry output value annual growth rate of about 30%; functional lighting reached About 20%; the company's independent innovation capability is obviously enhanced, and 3-5 upstream chip-scale production enterprises; the industrial concentration is significantly improved, and there are about 10 leading enterprises with independent brands and large market influence; Billion kWh, equivalent to 40 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
It is reported that China has launched green lighting engineering and semiconductor lighting application engineering, and has set up semiconductor lighting technology in the fields of ten key energy-saving projects, high-tech industrialization demonstration projects, enterprise technology upgrades and structural adjustment projects, and 863 plan new materials. The R&D and industrialization projects have initially formed a relatively complete LED lighting industry chain.
At the same time, China's LED lighting industrialization level continues to improve. In 2009, the number and performance of large-scale enterprises in the LED lighting industry increased significantly. Overall, the development of China's LED lighting industry has reached the scale of scale, the development of key technology products is relatively mature, and the quality and reliability of products have been significantly improved.
Foreign companies are optimistic about the Chinese market
“Looking at China's civil lighting alone, there is a market worth about 40 billion yuan.†Bishop Bai, CEO of Philips Lighting (China) Co., Ltd., revealed an attractive data. In the eyes of foreign lighting companies, China's LED lighting market is a land that is worth competing.
“Although the production and sales of incandescent lamps will have a certain impact on the company's performance in the short term, we have already begun to exert our efforts on LED lighting products. Soon, the new business of LED lighting products will promote our performance better. China is an emerging market with great opportunities in the future.†Toshiba (China) Co., Ltd. Chairman and President Tian Zhongxiao Ming told reporters that under the global energy saving trend, Toshiba Group strengthened its global marketing system in 2009. In France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States, we have established new outlets. By 2015, Toshiba's global LED lighting business will reach 350 billion yen, and in 2020, it will reach 1 trillion yen.
The confidence of foreign lighting companies stems from the Chinese government's attitude towards the LED lighting industry and the strong advantages of LED lighting products themselves.
In recent years, the Chinese government has vigorously promoted the incandescent lamp elimination plan, and the energy-saving lamp products including LED lighting have received strong support. In addition, the construction of large-scale public facilities in China has been launched one after another, increasing the demand for LED lighting products.
The energy-saving advantages of LED lighting products indicate its unpredictable future industry leading position. According to industry insiders, a 11-watt high-quality energy-saving lamp consumes 294 kWh less than a 60-watt incandescent lamp with the same effect during a 6000-hour lifetime, saving more than 160 yuan.
The Chinese government is implementing the project of “eliminating incandescent lamps and promoting energy-saving lampsâ€. However, the relevant incandescent lamp elimination roadmap has not yet been finalized. At present, the main practice is that the National Development and Reform Commission will issue cheap energy-saving lamps to urban residents through financial subsidies. For foreign LED lighting products, price has become the most critical factor in order to achieve scale in the Chinese market. At the same time, it is also crucial to get support from the Chinese government in the short term.
Domestic companies step up their layout
“If lighting companies don’t get involved in LED lighting, it’s a shameful thing.†An industry insider expressed the persistence and preference of domestic companies for LED lighting.
It is reported that domestic lighting companies such as Foshan Lighting, Snowlight, Zhejiang Chenhui, Zhejiang Sunshine, etc. have been expanding LED lighting business. Since the beginning of this year, the actions of Chongqing Silian Group and Taiwan UMC Group have also attracted attention.
The reporter learned from Chongqing Silian Group that the group plans to build a domestic LED industry chain with a scale of 10 billion yuan in Chongqing in the next few years. According to the overall development plan, Chongqing Silian Group will enter the ranks of 10 billion yuan in 2012. By 2015, the estimated output value will reach 20 billion yuan, and the core industry will rank among the top five global automation instruments.
It is understood that since the acquisition of the French Thomson Semiconductor Company and the Honeywell sapphire business in the United States in 2009, Chongqing Silian Group currently has an overseas factory with an annual output of 500,000 sapphire substrates, as well as connecting the world's top companies such as Osram and Philips. The lighting channel manufacturer's market channel has Honeywell's unique world-class sapphire production and processing core technology.
At the beginning of 2010, Taiwan UMC Group's investment in green energy business in Jining, Shandong Province continued to expand, and the development of UMC Jining Science and Technology Park was established. According to reports, in the investment in the production chain of LED and solar cells, Guanxi Optoelectronics, Liansheng Optoelectronics, Lianxiang Optoelectronics, Baolin Technology, Yongsheng Energy and other 9 Taiwan UMC Group directly or indirectly invested in the company. Has been stationed in the park.
It is reported that since 2009, Taiwan UMC and Shandong Province have reached a strategic cooperation framework for new light source and new energy industry, with Jining as the investment carrier, setting up LED and new energy high-tech projects, and it is expected to build LED epitaxial wafer industry and new energy industry within 5 years. Base, the first focus will be on LED substrates, epitaxial wafers, packaging, product applications, to create a complete LED industry chain.
Jining said that in the future, UMC Jining Science and Technology Park will gradually build a complete supporting industrial cluster, which will become a large-scale domestic LED research and development, manufacturing and supply base. It is expected that the annual sales of UMC Jining Science and Technology Park will exceed 10 billion yuan after all the projects of these 9 companies are fully put into production.
The reporter also learned that Skyworth Group will also enter the lighting industry. In January of this year, Shenzhen Skyworth-RGB Electronics Co., Ltd. lighting preparation team went to Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province to inspect lighting companies, looking for opportunities to cut into the LED lighting industry. The first group of the preparatory group visited Zhongshan Yinxingyu Lighting Co., Ltd., a leading enterprise in the field of LED commercial lighting.
Shenzhen Skyworth-RGB Electronics Co., Ltd. lighting production group said that LED lighting as an emerging sunrise industry, contains a huge market energy. After more than 20 years of hard work, Skyworth Group has entered the world's top ten color TV brands and China Electronics Top 100 companies from a small factory producing remote controls. The reason why Skyworth enters the LED lighting industry is that Skyworth values its broad market prospects and can further expand the industry chain of Skyworth Group.
Thinking piece
Innovative ability is not enough to break through
"The domestic LED lighting industry is developing rapidly, but the three major problems cannot be ignored. First, the LED lighting industry is overheated. Second, the quality of LED lighting products is uneven. Third, LED lighting products have experienced certain deviations in research and development and promotion. Recently, when talking about the development status of the domestic LED lighting industry, Dou Linping, deputy secretary general of the China Lighting Association, has no worries.
Opportunities and challenges coexist
LED lighting products can be widely used in landscape lighting, security lighting, special lighting and general lighting sources, and its market potential exceeds 100 billion yuan. According to the analysis of Jinqiu Caizhi, a market consulting organization, China's LED lighting industry is entering an important period of independent innovation and achieving leapfrog development. It is expected that a potential market of 50 billion to 100 billion US dollars will be formed in the next 5-10 years.
Most people in the industry are optimistic about the future of the LED lighting industry. They believe that the new light source will set off an alternative sport and eventually end the traditional fluorescent and incandescent lamps with semiconductor lighting fixtures.
Relevant statistics show that only LED street lights can save energy and save electricity for a Three Gorges Dam every year. Due to the energy-saving and environmental protection advantages of LED lighting, in recent years, its annual growth rate of global output has remained above 20%. The domestic LED lighting industry has also achieved strong development under the government's promotion. Under the efforts of government departments at various levels and many enterprises, China's LED lighting industry has initially formed four major regions in the Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta, Southeast China, Beijing and Dalian, and each region has basically formed a relatively complete industrial chain. In addition, various capitals have also actively invested in the LED lighting industry, and the scale of investment has grown rapidly. In the first half of 2009 alone, the total investment budget for LED projects in various parts of the country has exceeded 20 billion yuan.
LED lighting is optimistic because of its long life, energy saving, safety, and environmental protection. However, from the current point of view, due to various reasons such as cost, the LED lighting industry still has a bottleneck in its application.
Dou Linping believes that although the domestic LED industry investment and capacity expansion continue to accelerate, more than 3,000 LED lighting manufacturers, but 70% of them focus on the downstream integrated application links, lack of upstream core technology. And because the size of the company is generally small and the standards are missing, the quality of the products is uneven. Compared with foreign companies, domestic LED lighting companies still have a big gap in many aspects. How to effectively enhance the core competitiveness of domestic LED lighting companies and actively participate in the global competition is an urgent issue to be considered.
Three short boards become domestic LED bottlenecks
Despite the gratifying development of the domestic LED lighting industry, behind the rapid development, the shortcomings it faces are becoming increasingly prominent.
Dou Linping said that the LED lighting industry varies greatly from upstream to downstream. Upstream products are extremely difficult, high-difficult, high-input, and high-risk, while the barriers to entry in the middle and lower reaches are low and lack core technology. LED epitaxial wafers and chips account for about 70% of the industry's profits, LED packages account for about 10%-20%, LED applications account for about 10%-20%. From the perspective of the global LED industry, US and Japanese companies have monopoly advantages in technology and equipment, and European companies have outstanding advantages in applied technology. China's Taiwan region and the mainland mainly focus on the development of packaging and assembly, production ranks first in the world, and output value ranks second in the world.
Dou Linping believes that there are three major development bottlenecks in China's LED lighting industry. First, there is a big gap between the core technologies (mainly chip manufacturing) and foreign giants. The main patents are in the hands of foreign giants such as Philips and General Electric. Second, the overall level of the industry is low, mainly concentrated in the downstream packaging and assembly of low profit margins, and has not established its own standards and testing systems. Third, the phenomenon of low-level blind investment is serious and prone to vicious competition.
"Only from the supporting links, the auxiliary materials used by China's LED lighting companies, such as silica gel, patch silver paste, solder paste, etc., are basically imported, and some special test instruments and production tools are also dependent on imports. Obviously, We need to make up classes in these areas." An industry insider told reporters.
Liang Bingwen, chairman of Suzhou Najing Technology Co., Ltd. pointed out that China's LED lighting industry has great potential, and the challenges are mainly lack of talents, serious delays in product standard testing and supervision, insufficient market transparency, lack of independent intellectual property rights, lack of quality capital and investors, and Foreign companies have set up factories in China to intensify competition.
Market acceptance is worrying
As a pilot area for LED energy-saving street lamps and lighting projects in Guangdong Province, Chancheng District of Foshan has completed the conversion of street lamps for most of the road sections. However, residents in the vicinity reported that after installing LED street lights, the roads were obviously darkened and there were potential safety hazards.
In response to this problem, industry experts analyzed that there are three main methods for achieving white light in LED lighting: one is to synthesize white light through a combination of red, green and blue multi-chip multi-chip; the other is to use blue LED chip to excite yellow phosphor, by LED The yellow-green light emitted by the blue light and the phosphor is synthesized into white light, and an appropriate amount of red and green phosphors may be added for improving the color development property; and the third is to use the ultraviolet light LED to excite the three primary color phosphors to synthesize white light. For a long time, China's urban street lamps are mainly high-pressure sodium lamps. Residents have generally adapted to yellow lighting street lamps. It takes a certain amount of time to accept white LED street lamps.
Wu Zhenle, chairman of Shenzhen Hantian Technology Co., Ltd. believes that this has a lot to do with the lack of upstream core technology in the LED lighting industry. According to him, due to the lack of upstream core technology, coupled with the low barriers to entry in the LED lighting industry, many companies are generally small. Due to the lack of standards, the quality of LED lighting products on the market is currently uneven, which directly affects the lighting effect.
Dou Linping believes that from the current situation, the popularity of LED lighting still has considerable difficulties. First of all, the current price of LED lighting products is still high, although LED lighting products have energy-saving features in the long run, but most consumers and business users still take a wait-and-see attitude. At present, LED lighting products are mainly used in high-end residential office lighting, automotive lighting, government procurement and other application fields, and the development trend of civilians is slow.
Secondly, the main patents for upstream and downstream LED lighting products are still in the hands of foreign companies, and the quality of products produced by domestic enterprises is uneven. In the domestic market, foreign companies such as Osram and Philips dominated. The “patent encirclement†built by these large foreign companies to domestic enterprises has become a bottleneck for the development of domestic LED lighting enterprises.
Although the domestic LED lighting market has a promising prospect, the development of domestic enterprises is still very difficult. The acceptance of the public, the price and the technical factors are all blocking the "high wall" in front of LED lighting companies. Therefore, the promotion of LED lighting in China also requires strong government support and enterprises to strengthen independent innovation.
The industry expects the national standard to be launched early
Liu Muqing, a professor at the Institute of Electric Light Sources at Fudan University, believes that market competition is inevitable. At present, LED lighting products need to solve performance and price problems. According to reports, affected by the national energy conservation and environmental protection policy, although the price does not dominate, the expansion of the overall market for LED lighting products allows the industry to see the prospects for future industrial upgrading.
In fact, the domestic lighting industry is currently in a state of no shortage of heads. Philips, NVC Lighting, Foshan Lighting, Foxconn and other top ten companies in the domestic market have a market share of less than 13% of the total market capacity. According to industry insiders, LED lighting is now in a separate position because there is no national standard. There are more than 2,000 enterprises in the Pearl River Delta region, but half of the companies that can truly achieve stable products and produce according to orders are not available. Liu Muqing believes that if the national standards are introduced as soon as possible, it will help solve this industry problem.
Dou Linping said that the national standards of Chinese products are mainly divided into two categories, one is the safety standard, which is a mandatory standard, which is equivalent to the international standard issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC); the other is the application and performance standards, which are recommended. Sex standard. "At present, there is a misunderstanding in the industry that LED lighting products have no standards. In fact, this is not very accurate. There are no standards for front-end chips and packaged tubes, but the AQSIQ, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology have released ten Several standards for LED detection methods and modules," Dou Linping said.
In addition, in view of the fact that the LED's illuminating characteristics are different from those of traditional light sources, the National Lighting Standardization Technical Committee's luminaire standardization subcommittee reported several performance standards for LED lighting products this year, including LED road luminaire performance standards and LED spotlight performance standards. In the future, depending on the market and product development status, relevant performance standards for LED lighting products will be formulated at any time. However, such standards are recommended as standards.
Dou Linping emphasized that China Lighting Association will use the "Opinions on the Development of Semiconductor Lighting Energy-Saving Industry" jointly issued by the six ministries and commissions this year and in the next few years to strengthen cooperation with relevant units and testing departments to guide LED lighting enterprises in a scientific, reasonable and timely manner. Develop and launch LED lighting products to promote the healthy development of the LED lighting industry.
