Japanese researchers the world's first scalable OLED display

Professor Takashi Yoshio of the University of Tokyo in Japan and companies such as Dainippon Printing have developed OLED displays that can be stretched like rubber. The wiring that transmits power to the components is a soft material composed of a combination of rubber and carbon nanotubes. So far, although there are already O LEDs that can be bent; but they can be stretched, this is the world's first. According to the cloud, it is possible to apply a display that folds or does not change its performance, or a new display that changes shape according to the purpose. This research has been published in the British Science Journal NatureMaterials (electronic version).

The method of use includes a screen-like egg-shaped, mobile phone with a novel design, and display of weather information on a display in the shape of a globe. It is expected to achieve practical goals in about five years.

The newly developed display is 10 cm square and stretches like rubber when stretched. The green-light 5 mm square OLED component has 256 side by side. It is characterized in that the wiring of the copper wire is generally used, and a new soft material that can be energized is used. It will be called an ionic liquid, a special liquid that does not evaporate, and is mixed with carbon nanotubes. High-speed jetting with a fine nozzle to spread the bundle of carbon nanotubes and then mix the rubber material into it.

Its conductivity is up to one hundred times higher than that of commercially available conductive rubber, and its performance can be maintained by repeating stretching for more than one thousand times. It was applied as a wiring for connecting the OLED components, and the display was prototyped, and the brightness was found to be the same as that of the copper wire. In the future, we will further study the miniaturization of components and the miniaturization of components and wiring to achieve practical use.
