Agilent introduces waveforms for next-generation storage devices and telecom components and systems...

(Beijing, June 15, 2009), Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today announced three new measurement solutions for testing next-generation storage devices and telecom components and systems. Based on the 86100C Digital Communications Analyzer (DCA), the new solution is the first of its kind in the industry, enabling engineers to easily view and accurately quantify the design quality of their latest components and systems.

The new measurement solution is:

ο Integrated 16X Fibre Channel receiver;

ο Advanced jitter analysis software;

ο Complex modulation signal analysis software.

Integrated 16X Fibre Channel Receiver

The Agilent 86105D 20GHz Bandwidth Optical Port/35GHz Bandwidth Electrical Port Insert Module is specifically designed for precision waveform analysis of 8X or 16X Fibre Channel and 10GbSONET/SDH/Ethernet speed optical transceivers. The integrated optical receiver has an unfiltered bandwidth of over 20 GHz and a switchable compliance test reference receiver. The receiver supports a full range of waveform analysis from early development to mass production across multiple transceiver technologies. When used with the new 83496B clock recovery module, the 86105D forms the industry's first complete waveform analysis solution to meet the emerging 16X Fibre Channel standard.

Transceiver designers and manufacturers can develop and test transceivers operating at different signaling rates in various communication systems. The wide bandwidth and wide wavelength capabilities of the 86100C/86105D system allow engineers to test next-generation 16X Fibre Channel designs, as well as the mainstream transceivers currently used in short-range datacom, storage, and long-haul telecom applications.

Advanced jitter analysis software

To ensure that digital communication systems achieve zero-error performance, engineers use data test patterns to simulate actual traffic. Some test patterns are very long and may cause problems for the test instrument. The Agilent 86100C Option 401 software enables engineers to analyze the jitter of random patterns and long data patterns (including PRBS31). This feature makes it easier for engineers to test transmitters and create test signals to verify receiver performance. Option 401 software uses an external PC to extract waveforms from the 86100 CDCA. This allows engineers to separate jitter into random jitter and uncertainty jitter and evaluate total jitter and eye contours at low probability levels.

Complex modulation signal analysis software

Engineers designing long-haul telecommunications systems and components will use complex modulation formats rather than simple NRZ or RZ encoding when improving system functionality and increasing span distance. The new software from the 86100CDCA provides signal analysis for advanced optical communication technologies. Firmware software version 8.1 allows the analyzer to convert the receiver output to an IQ map, which makes it easier for engineers to see the receiver's ability to detect complex modulated signals. Version 8.1 also enables engineers to measure the J2 and J9 parameters recently developed according to the latest data communication test standards to create receiver test signals.

Scott Sampl, vice president of Agilent Technologies and general manager of the oscilloscope business unit, said: "The modular platform of the 86100CDCA is still the main asset of the optical communications industry. With the continuous introduction of new systems, we will upgrade hardware and software in time to provide engineers with The required waveform measurement capabilities. Engineers can continue to use their familiar instruments to quickly meet evolving measurement needs."
