Japanese research team developed superconducting light-emitting diodes


The research team led by Prof. Sakao, a professor at Hokkaido University in Japan, has successfully developed a superconducting light-emitting diode that is essential for the realization of "quantum communication."

The research team added superconducting electrodes to the 1.6-micron-wavelength LEDs used in fiber-optic communications to combine superconducting and optical communication technologies. The new superconducting technology LEDs are 20 times brighter than the brightest LEDs.

Superconductivity and optical communication are the basic technologies of quantum information communication, and previous research has been separated. The new LED developed this time is the first combination of these two technologies.

The research results are commissioned research projects of the Japan Science and Technology Agency, and are attended by a number of companies and universities. The research results were published online in the international science journal "APeX", which was launched this year by the Japan Society of Applied Physics.
