Texas Instruments Introduces New LED Controller Supporting Constant Power Regulation

Recently, Texas Instruments (TI) introduced a new LED controller that supports constant power regulation. The LM3447AC/DCLED driver includes dimmer detection, phase decoder, and adjustable hold current circuitry for smooth, flicker-free tuning in off-line isolated LED lighting applications including A19, E26/27, and PAR30/38 bulbs Light, but also supports the application of modified lamps.

Conventional drivers use constant current control to precisely adjust the LED forward current. This method allows LEDs in the same bin to produce consistent light output and brightness. However, once the current is supplied to the LED, the solder joint temperature rises, causing the forward voltage to drop and the efficiency to decrease. Conversely, with the latest LM3447, which supports constant power regulation, the LED forward voltage that decreases with temperature can be resolved by boosting the LED current, maintaining constant LED power. This increases efficiency by up to 10% over the entire luminaire operating temperature range.

The LM3447 is part of TI's line of offline LED lighting controllers, including the industry's first phase dimmable LED driver NationalLM3445 with constant current control technology and the TPS92310 primary side regulator for non-dimming applications.

Key features and benefits of the LM3447 LED driver
Integrated phase dimmer decoding and dimming detection circuitry supports convenient design and maximum efficiency;

Support for leading edge (TRIAC) and trailing edge dimmers;

Primary side control supports isolated lighting design without optocoupler;

Constant power LED load regulation can improve the efficiency of the LED light group and compensate for the temperature change of the LED contact;

The fixed frequency discontinuous conduction mode flyback topology supports the valley switching function to simplify EMI filter design;

Power factor correction greater than 0.9, fully meet all regulatory requirements;

Thermal feedback not only provides over-temperature protection for LED groups, but still supports lower light output;

LED open and short circuit protection and driver IC thermal shutdown prevent lamp electronics from damaging in the event of a fault.
