The flat panel display (FPD) industry is in the midst of a historic wave of building new factories to produce AMOLED displays. According to the IHS Markit report, this will bring about $9.5 billion worth of AMOLED-specific production equipment purchases in 2017.
IHS Markit pointed out that equipment used to produce TFT (Thin Film Transistor) backplanes will account for 47% of the total market in 2017, with total revenue of US$4.4 billion. The organic light-emitting layer deposition and packaging tool will generate revenues of US$2.2 billion and US$1.2 billion respectively this year.
Charles Annis, Senior Director of IHS Markit, stated: “There are many methods for depositing OLED materials. However, the Fine Metal Mask (FMM) evaporation tool used for the production of high-resolution mobile displays accounts for the largest revenue from the deposition equipment in the new plant construction. section."
Evaporation equipment is technically very complex, including multiple cluster vacuum tools linked by robots. Each tool includes evaporation source and mask docking capabilities and requires a large number of pumping systems.
These tools are usually very large and can exceed 100 meters in length, so this requires a lot of capital investment.
Annis said: “The market for high-performance AMOLED deposition equipment is dominated by Canon Tokki, which accounted for more than half of the market in 2016. At least five evaporation equipment manufacturers hope to take advantage of this explosive market opportunity. However, due to large panel manufacturing The company is very interested in the mass production experience that Canon Tokki has, and we expect this company will gain further market share growth in 2017."
AMOLED also requires a high-performance package to prevent environmental degradation of sensitive organic light-emitting materials. The packaging barrier is usually made of a stack of metal, glass, or film. However, most of the new AMOLED factories currently under construction are looking at flexible plastic displays, which rely on cost-intensive multilayer film packages (TFE).
Annis said: "In the past few years, flexible AMOLED manufacturers have made great progress in simplifying the TFE structure. Even so, the productivity of depositing high-quality inorganic films and printing organic layers in a closed environment is still a complex challenge. The large number of deposition chambers and auxiliary tool requirements make the TFE production line one of the largest businesses in the AMOLED equipment market."
It is estimated that between 2016 and 2018, AMOLED's production equipment will cost approximately US$23 billion. Equipment manufacturers, especially equipment manufacturers that provide deposition and packaging solutions, will usher in historic marketing opportunities.
