At the Samsung Developers Conference last year, Injong Rhee, Samsung Software and Internet Service Development Director, revealed that Samsung is working on an independent virtual reality headset. Currently Samsung has brought a Gear VR based on mobile phones, but now Samsung is preparing to apply the latest Exynos9 chips to VR Headsets and its smartphones, and even to automotive, robotics, and wearable devices.
In order to make the Exynos chip easier to sell and understood by customers, Samsung redefined the Exynos chip. Exynos chips are now divided into four series of Exynos 9/7/5/3. The Exynos9 chip mainly interfaces with high-end devices and VR heads, while the Exynos3 chip is used for low-end smartphones.
The latest Exynos9 chip is the newly released Exynos 8895. The chip has a total of eight cores, including four M2 cores and four A53 cores. The new ARM Mali G71 GPU (20 cores) brings powerful graphics processing capabilities. The processor supports 4K video playback and recording capabilities at 120fps; the chip also has a visual processing unit for VR that allows motion detection and tracking of head movements; integrated Gigabit LTE modem, upload and download support for Cat.13/Cat .16 (up to 150Mbps/1Gbps) and supports LPDDR4 memory.
Now that Exynos 8895 is in volume production, we will soon see Samsung demonstrate VR independent heads based on the Exynos 8895 chip.
