Google (microblogging) has a bold vision for the future, but it must first avoid repeating the mistakes made in the past.
Remember Google Glass? It is one of Google's most failed products. Essentially, Google Glass is a computer that is worn on the head, it can run a variety of applications and allows users to take videos and photos, which clearly shows how much the gap between the technology industry and the real world.
It’s so weird to wear Google Glass, so users get an nickname – “glassholesâ€. Due to concerns about privacy protection, some places even set the rule that "Women who wear Google Glass is not allowed to enter." Others have been attacked by strangers for wearing Google Glass.
Google completely abandoned Google Glass in 2015, but now it has launched another project related to augmented reality technology, which is said to change the way people interact with the world around them. You guessed it, this project may also raise privacy concerns.
Project Tango is an augmented reality project for smartphones. You can use a compatible mobile phone camera to aim at the target, it will add a virtual layer and various digital markers on the real world image, of course, you can only use the special equipment in your hand to see these digital markers.
Google’s representative said at a press conference at MWC last week that the company is only applying this technology to some high-end devices, but it hopes to eventually apply it to all mobile phones, just like GPS. One of them.
But what does this have to do with privacy protection? Converting the real world into a digital interface, it can track and record all the objects in the image more closely, and now public cameras are very popular, so some people worry that this technology will invade the privacy of others.
Amit Singh, Google's vice president of virtual reality business and operations, believes that because it is applied to a mobile phone, the situation is completely different. He said: "I think because it is built on the smartphone platform, it will be easier for people to accept."
He said: "Unlike Google glasses, mobile phones can of course be taken for photos. You are talking about user behavior now. There must be motives behind this behavior, and the other party can refuse."
He added: "There is a difference when using Google Glass. The other party may not know that you are taking pictures. The same is true for Snap's Spectacles glasses. As an industry, we must continue to mature."
But this may not be the case. When asked what he thinks is theoretically the most ideal augmented reality product, Singer replied: "A simple, less noticeable full-field glasses."
But he also said: "You are talking about the future, I can't predict when it will be realized. But such an idea may initially disgust those who oppose Google Glass."
Launching a project like Project Tango means that people have taken the first step towards this goal. Singh said: "Augmented reality will be the first to be applied to smartphones. Everyone can experience it. This day will come earlier than most people expected."
Singer and Google believe that before this goal is achieved, people's attitude toward augmented reality may gradually soften.
