As early as last year, the United States Qualcomm has entered the VR news, as the world leader in wireless technology, Qualcomm will launch its first VR headset Snapdragon VR820 in 2017. Recently, Qualcomm announced that its VR all-in-one machine is expected to be launched in the second half of this year.
Qualcomm’s latest VRDK head-up is a reference design. The company has positioned itself as a manufacturer of consumer electronics products. Based on Qualcomm’s Xiaolong series of VR hardware, it has created its own head display. Now that they are working with other partners, the first consumer-grade headline is expected to be launched in the second half of 2017.
Qualcomm's latest VRDK is built on the company's new Snapdragon 835 chip. Although the Snapdragon 835 is also suitable for a range of mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablets, the company said that the chip is also built specifically for VR.
In order to express its own determination in the development of VR technology, Qualcomm has already formed the "HMD Accelerator Program," which aims to "reduce the impact of resource constraints on the rapid commercialization of VR HMD." Basically, Qualcomm wants to use its expertise to help companies set up their own VR headsets. This is similar to Intel's Project Alloy.
The fundamentals of the HMD Accelerator program are based on the Snapdragon 835 VRDK, the inside-out tracking technology, the 90Hz 2560×1440 AM OLED display, the 100 degree field of view, 4GB RAM, eye tracking and hand tracking (via Leap Motion's new Mobile sensor). However, VRDK itself will not be sold, at least not by Qualcomm (note that VRDK is only a trial version, the consumer version is ready to be sold in the second half).
The consumer version of the VR machine may have some "in and out" with the VRDK, but both are built on Qualcomm's hardware and underlying technologies. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will choose which hardware and features to choose from in the VRDK, and may add some “features†to them.
The company also plans to distribute VRDKs to content creators to stimulate the ecosystem of applications that are specifically built for VRDK. These headsets are expected to be sold to developers in the second quarter of 2017.
