Product development for solid-state lighting (SSL) is not limited to LED and drive electronics. Richie Richards explains how to evaluate this complex design element, including material selection, heat treatment, compatibility, and more. As long as they are properly handled, they will produce the best lighting products.
The old saying goes: "When you see it with your own eyes, you can know the quality of things, but sometimes you can't say it." The design elements that affect the performance of solid-state lighting, as the saying goes, are often indescribable. The light produced by LEDs is only a small part of the overall evaluation system. For a complete evaluation, the installation process is as important as the product life cycle. Next, let's look at some examples that are easy to ask questions.
LED technology is developing rapidly, and many lighting manufacturers like to make unfounded claims about the color quality, brightness, luminous efficiency, durability, and even the entire product. Without proper heat treatment design or improper circuit design, it will cause excessive electrical stress. If chemical compatibility problems occur in the production process, the quality of LED products will be deteriorated and even lighting failure will occur. Figure 1 collects the process causes of quality deterioration and failure.

Overall assessment
To ensure the quality of solid-state lighting products, quantitative testing is essential. This will determine the design strength and long-term reliability of the product. Not just the LED part, the entire solid-state lighting product is about quality. Cree has introduced comprehensive testing of thermal, electrical, mechanical, photometric and optical parameters (TEMPO) for LED luminaires. The TEMPO service helps LED component customers solve problems. The project also enables product developers to quickly respond to challenges, save development costs, and gain more market time for new products.
Systematic evaluation of lighting products is a multi-point testing and analysis process. Engineers must conduct a series of tests on thermal, electrical, mechanical, and luminosity and submit comprehensive reports that determine the performance of the product. The toolbar at the end of this article is accompanied by a detailed test directory for the TEMPO service. In addition, the test results will be applied to the TM-21 standard adopted by the Lighting Engineering Society (IES) to design LED lifetimes.
Pigtail threader
Filling:
Use PVC hard pipe as a protective sleeve, stuff 48 pigtails into the pipe one after another, let them protect the pigtails, and then pass through a 5m diameter 3.5cm corrugated pipe; the number of operators is 3; the pipe cost is 50 yuan; the test time is 71 minutes.
Advantages: good protection.
Disadvantages: poor flexibility, low space utilization, poor applicability, and not portable.
Filling:
Use a plastic hose as a protective sleeve, stuff 48 pigtails into the tube one after another, let them protect the pigtails, and then pass through a 5m diameter 3.5cm corrugated tube; the number of operators is 2; the cost of the pipe is 45 yuan; the test time is 57 minutes.
Advantages: good protection, good flexibility.
Disadvantages: low space utilization, poor applicability, and not portable.
Wrapped:
The low-density polyethylene material is used as a protective cover, the 48 pigtails are reasonably placed and arranged, and finally rolled up and passed through a 5m diameter 3.5cm corrugated tube; the number of operators is 1; the material cost is 2 yuan; the test time is 49 minutes.
Advantages: light and practical, good flexibility, and high space utilization.
Disadvantages: difficult to arrange.
