Li Bingjie, chairman of Jingdian, said yesterday (16) that LEDs have overcapacity this year. The market demand in the first quarter is not strong. Although demand will heat up this season, the price pressure caused by overcapacity is still there.
He said that the current observation focus is on the timing of the new application of new technologies such as Mini LEDs, which will become the key to the booming of the economy. He estimates that the Mini LED will have a chance this year, but the amount of time it will contribute will fall to 2019; as for the Micro LED, it should be after 2020.
Li Bingjie is an academician of the Taiwan Institute of Technology. He attended the Buda ceremony of Liu Wenxiong, the new president of the Industrial Technology Research Institute, and expressed his views on the LED industry boom and the application of new technologies.
Li Bingjie said that in order to balance the current situation of LED overcapacity, it depends on the time of new technology in the market. The second observation technology is that this year, Mini LED has an opportunity, but the significant contribution in real use is estimated to fall next year; As for the possibility of Micro LED this year is not high, even if there are not many, mainly the technology to be broken. He estimates that the volume of Micro LEDs should be after 2020.
He analyzed that although the application of large-size displays will be better than the morning market, the number of TVs is far less than that of millions of mobile phones. Large-size applications for public displays will be the first to be introduced, but the real impact on LED supply is still mobile phone products.
Li Bingjie said that in addition to the LED product line, in recent years, Jingdian has been in the VCSEL (vertical cavity surface type laser), detector and other technical layout.
In addition to the traditional optical communication applications, VCSEL is the OEM for Taiwan and mainland manufacturers, and is also actively developing towards the most popular consumer 3D sensing market, or starting from the foundry business.
It is reported that the mobile phone products of Jingdian Mini LED are expected to start shipping in the third quarter. In addition, foreign brokers estimate that Jingdian's 6-inch wafer capacity will produce VCSELs for Apple's iPhone from the second quarter, while Android's VCSEL products are also expected to ship in the second half of the year, optimistic about the development of PV in the VCSEL field. .
