AIR 020 | Artificial Intelligence: How does it work in the industrial world and how does it differ from academics?

Today's CCF-GAIR global artificial intelligence and robotics summit, the industry, Dana shared and discussed on the academic frontier of machine learning and the commercial application of artificial intelligence. What is interesting, however, is what kind of experience does a “cross-border” person do under the new wave of artificial intelligence? At the roundtable forum held during the summit, Dr. Yan Shuicheng, the dean of the 360 Institute of Artificial Intelligence who took the initiative in academia and industry, answered the question.

Dr. Yan Shuicheng graduated from Peking University and is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Illinois (UIUC). He has joined 360 for about 10 months now. Prior to joining 360, he led the Machine Learning and Computer Vision Laboratory at the National University of Singapore and served as an associate professor. His main research areas are computer vision, deep learning, and multimedia analysis. He led the team's "Network in Network" to generate great impetus for deep learning. At the same time, his team developed "Purine" is the world's first open source multi-machine multi-GPU deep learning system.

In 2014, Dr. Yan Shuicheng was selected as the "World's Most Influential Scientist in 2014" published by THOMSON REUTERS. Later, he was also awarded the Singapore Young Scientist Award (YSA) and Young Professor Research Achievement Award.

In fact, even if academics are experts, it is not immune to the transition to join the industrial community to participate in applied research - can I survive after I go? On the forum, the host sent a question to Yan Shuicheng: " What do you think is the restriction of 360 artificial intelligence or are you not satisfied?"

Faced with such a sharp question, Yan Shuicheng said:

I want to explain this issue from the perspective of weapons. Artificial intelligence can be used in the academic and industrial games as an analogy for borrowing martial arts. Everyone in the martial arts is admired and famous. You can not only defeat others but also refine some moves. I hope these moves will help others win in the fight. Artificial intelligence research in academia is similar to martial arts.

In the industrial world, these moves become less important. What is important is that you can have a kind of martial arts, or a form of engagement that can defeat others and solve a problem. This is a good artificial intelligence.

For example, when we solve the artificial intelligence in the industry, we rely on artificial intelligence to beat others 152 times, or 1000 times. The point is that you have to have artificial intelligence ideas and methods to solve this problem. This is the difference between the two I think they are.

When I joined 360, it had its own advantages. In the current special period, we can say that the network is a little ahead of the academic community in the artificial intelligence community. What changes have made to the AI competition? Until 2013, the academic community may have won the first prize or a very good result in the artificial intelligence competition. However, by 2014 and 2015, we will find that very good results come from the Internet.

In fact, the Internet does not have as much computing resources. However, the average laboratory in academia is probably a dozen or a dozen or so. If it can reach hundreds of words, it will be ordered to teach. When I entered 360, smart hardware was a very critical business. Now that live broadcast is a very critical business, these things are exactly what I want to do, so 360 is a very good choice.

What is wrong with the academic community to the industrial world? First is the problem that the pace of the Internet is much faster than that of the academic community. In academic circles, there are good results in six months or three months. There can be a good academic paper, which is also good. As an industry, one hour ahead is very valuable. This is a big challenge for the academic community to transfer industry words.

Then, "The institute is looking more at the future. Does your boss give you specific indicators?"

“My personal key is because of the famous enterprises in China. There is no standard for this kind of research institute like Microsoft Asia. In China, to have a good research institute is to have two paths at the same time—on the one hand, Results can quickly support existing businesses and allow artificial intelligence algorithms or ideas to play a role in the business. In addition, there must be a long-term idea - what kind of artificial intelligence technology products need in one and a half years or a year later, or to hatch themselves The business that can be put on the line within a short period of time is a good way to ensure that the institute will survive within the famous enterprises."

Finally, in a sentence summarizing its views on the development of artificial intelligence, Dr. Yan Shuicheng said that artificial intelligence has made the academic community and the industrial community have something in common. This is very good.
