30-year data analysis veteran Tom Coughlin: How can companies efficiently store and use data?

Editor's note: With the rapid development of the Internet, cloud computing, mobile terminals and the Internet of Things, global data volume is growing at an explosive rate. According to market research agency IDC, the total annual global data growth rate will maintain at around 50%. By 2020, the global data volume will reach 40 ZB. This undoubtedly laid a solid foundation for the development of the big data industry. Of course, there will be challenges where there are opportunities. Faced with the rapid growth of data, how to efficiently store and use data has become a difficult task for enterprises to overcome.

Recently, Dr. Tom Coughlin's article expressed his opinion on this issue. Tom Coughlin is an IEEE Senior Member, Chairman of Coughlin Associate, Founder of the Annual Storage Visions Conference and author of Digital Storage in Consumer Electronics. He has won six patents and has more than 30 years of experience working in the data storage industry. The original titled " Recent Progress And Collaborations In Digital Storage " was published on Forbes. Today, open cloud storage is accelerating the large demand for unstructured data and further optimizing network traffic management. In addition, data companies are also actively working with infrastructure providers to provide consumers with better services and improve the user experience.

Redhat points out that the growth of data storage capacity is now faster than the IT industry's storage budget. Hard disk drives (HDDs) are getting bigger and bigger, but the average price per gigabyte has dropped less than 5 years ago or even earlier. They said that to fill the gap between demand and cost, software that can manage and use storage space efficiently is the key .

A user survey conducted by OpenStack in April confirmed that there is indeed a growing trend in storage capacity requirements. The survey shows that 68% of participants believe that they will allocate a certain amount of budget to data storage, and only 1/3 of participants feel that they are ready to meet the PB-level workload. Redhat believes that dealing with increasing storage workloads requires greater flexibility and greater scale of work, while storage software solutions that separate the control plane from the data plane can meet this need . They expect the share of the software-defined storage market to increase to 60% by 2020.

Data migration is the key to making cloud computing widely available. The startup company NS1 (which recently obtained Round B financing) is upgrading the old DNS to a new IP address. Its proprietary DNS product is SaaS, which manages DNS and application traffic in public, private or mixed network environments. Its managed DNS server is a cloud-based intelligent DNS that provides application developers with services such as speed and precision enhancements and network traffic control. In addition, it can also log into Pulsar (Pulsar is an advanced traffic management solution that makes use of network data to make real-time decisions about the traffic path). This type of product enables content delivery performance to be improved, so that data can be moved in or out of the relevant storage system. In the future, their market may account for nearly 2 billion U.S. dollars.

Pure Storage stated that they have extended cooperation with Cisco to further provide enhanced FlashStack Converged Infrastructure products (Enhanced FlashStack Converged Infrastructure). FlashStack is part of the Cisco Unified Computing Systems and Pure Storage FlashArray, supporting mission-critical and business-critical applications such as VDI deployments for up to 5,000 seats and Oracle 12c-equipped application.

Recently, Panasas and Western Digital are using iRODS (an integrated rule-oriented data system). They are based on open source software to mine data from life science research. Panasas ActiveStor Astorage, HGST Active Archive System and iRODS Data Management Software have created a multi-tier storage infrastructure that is easy to manage and has high performance. This architecture can accelerate and optimize data access, simulation and data analysis.

Recently, Kaminario announced their K-Assured business guarantee program to provide guarantees for customers in terms of expanding and maintaining SSDs.

It can be seen that each member company can usually benefit from forming a strategic alliance. It can be imagined that cooperation between these companies and customer-centric storage management projects will greatly promote the development of cloud storage systems and solid-state storage.
