100G network interconnection technology, Intel is at the front

Intel announced at the "Open Compute Summit" that the company has developed a 100Gbit / s silicon photoelectric module, which is expected to redefine the server design of large data centers.

In addition, the Open Compute Summit led by Facebbok also showed the first board design specifically developed for the new common socket architecture for use with ARM or x86 server SoCs. Applied Micro also exhibited x8 PCI Express interface slots with Intel.

Applied Micro said it will support 100G Ethernet and will use FinFET to develop its next-generation X-Gene system. Dell (Dell) showed an X-Gene development system with an x86 server.

Calxeda demonstrates the use of its ARM Soc-developed storage server server motherboard, which can be used to control hard disk arrays. Intel also showed a similar board that used its Atom-based Centerton SoC.

In addition, Mellanox demonstrated a brand new system, which combines 24 network interface controllers and a switch in a single box, which can execute Ethernet or Infiniband at up to 56Gbps.

The following atlas shows industry manufacturers' discussions on 100G silicon optical modules used in Intel data centers at the OCS Summit.

Intel 100G silicon optical module inside revealed

Two years ago, Intel was still very low-key about the development of integrated silicon optical modules. Later, it was decided to make the R & D team a self-financing independent business unit and a joint venture within Intel.

Today, the company announced the launch of 100G silicon optical module engineering samples and a connector jointly developed with Corning. The exact cost or power consumption of the component is still unknown, but Intel said it will be officially released in a few months.

At the same time, Intel is developing interconnect specifications for CPU boards, memory boards and network cards. The company will also develop design rules for the module application.

The wafer is produced at Intel ’s manufacturing plant and tested at its plant in Santa Clara, California. Intel Chief Technology Officer JusTIn Rattner said that the power consumption of this component is less than half of the current 40G best component power consumption.

"We think that this optical PHY will have a market size of more than one billion US dollars in the next few years. If it is widely used in large data centers, it will bring a bigger market." ? Rattner said.

This move symbolizes Intel ’s first establishment of a model in which its research team established an internal enterprise to support the company ’s business. In Intel ’s second fundraising review, the business unit has improved from when it started two years ago, including adding more customers, reducing product costs, and better availability, Rattner added.

The silicon optical module supports standard 100G Ethernet up to a distance of 100 meters. Although some customers require a version that is several kilometers longer, so far, the market Intel is targeting is to respond to the connection needs between racks within the data center.

Intel also has a development blueprint for CPU integration, but we are currently focusing on inter-rack applications, said Jason Waxman, general manager of the Intel Data Center.

With this technology, there will be an opportunity to simplify the protocol. Rattner said that the design of IP routing is robust enough to respond to failures, but the data center does not need this design, he added.

Bechtolsheim is optimistic about Intel's silicon optical module

Switch manufacturer Arista Networks is one of the companies that tested the sample. The company's founder Andy Bechtolsheim discussed the product's development potential with Intel's chief technology officer JusTIn Rattner at the OCS conference.

In an interview with reporters, Bechtolshei said that this module is more cost-effective than many products in the industry, including 100G Ethernet aggregation switches used in large data centers like Facebook.

"The average price of a 100G Ethernet network is about one hundred thousand dollars-this is really crazy-and, even if this standard was completed a few years ago, only a few hundred can be sold a year," Bechtolsheim said.

Intel's module is expected to change this cost equation. In addition, he emphasized, "This is also very important for server rack internal and external applications; because of the higher bandwidth and lower latency, you don't have to worry about data configuration issues and it may affect the software level. He said that Ethernet will be able to be easily implemented on the new module.

Intel ’s optical modules can also be used to achieve 100G PCI Express without the need to configure Ethernet for each server board in the rack. However, this application will require new chips and software, Bechtolsheim emphasized.

"What the industry has been lacking is to achieve such speeds," he said. "Intel optical modules are the first technology we have seen that allows PCI Express to achieve this speed, power consumption and cost-it is as important as PCI Express itself. , "He added.
