Chips & Media, a leading supplier of video IP cores, recently announced CODA966, the latest member of its multi-format video codec IP CODA9 series, to support China's new AVS + video standard.
AVS + is China's second-generation video coding standard. It was jointly released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the Science and Technology Department of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) to meet the needs of new and growing broadcasting technologies, such as HDTV and 3DTV. The AVS + standard uses three new advanced encoding technologies: advanced entropy encoder (AEC), a frame-level weighted quantization (AWQ), and enhanced field encoding (B-Direct, P-Skip). Compared with H.264 / AVC HP, it can achieve similar coding efficiency and subjective image quality at the same bit rate.
In July 2012, AVS + was officially approved as China's national standard, and was applied in the 3DTV broadcasting experiment conducted by China Central Television (CCTV) since January 2013. According to DigiTImes forecast, LCD TV shipments in China are expected to reach 43 million units in 2013, of which 2D products will reach 20 million units, accounting for about 50% of the market share.
Based on its CODA9 series platform, Chips & Media's CODA966IP can provide support for up to 60 frames per second (fps) full HD 1080p video decoding and encoding, and supports the widest range of broadcast video standards such as MPEG-2, H.264 / AVC, VC1, MVC , RealVideo, AVS, and advanced Internet video standards, including MPEG4, Sorenson, DivX, VP8, and Theora, and add AVS + decoding capabilities. CODA966 has impressive multimedia processing capabilities and excellent performance, allowing customers to easily respond to the needs of China's next-generation consumer market.
Starting from CODA966, Chips & Media will further expand the AVS + decoding function on the CODA9 platform and the low-end CODA7 platform in the third quarter of 2013. Chips & Media's CODA966IP core will be delivered to customers at the end of March.
